Souths Cares on the Sunshine Coast

Last week the Souths Cares team travelled to the Sunshine Coast to facilitate Rabbitohs Wellbeing workshops and Connect, Respect, Resilience workshops in the lead up to the Rabbitohs Round 21 clash against the New Zealand Warriors.

The tour kicked off on Monday at Caloundra State School in the morning followed by Our Lady of the Rosary School in the afternoon, with students engaging well with Souths Cares health promotion workshops and the Junior League clinics hosted by NRL development staff.

Caloundra State School’s Principal, Brendan Bopf is a passionate Bunnies supporter and was thrilled to see Souths Cares supporting the region.

“I loved the whole experience and so did the kids. Wonderful to see the great club giving back to the community on the Sunshine Coast”, Brendan said.

On Tuesday the team headed South-West to Landsborough State School which is in a small community inland from the Sunshine Coast. Souths Cares received a great reception from the school community, who were excited to have visitors at the school and participate in the workshops. In the afternoon the team attended Beerwah State High School, where students engaged well with the discussions facilitated by Souths Cares Ambassadors Yileen Gordon and Rhys Wesser; learning about important topics such as respectful relationships, mental health and wellbeing.

Wednesday was a huge day for the team, visiting Mooloolaba State School in the morning followed by Maroochydore State School in the afternoon, where they to continued promote important health and wellbeing messages and provide students with the opportunity to get active and develop their Rugby League skills.

Stuart Maish is the Principal at Maroochydore State School and was full of praise for Souths Cares approach to program delivery.

“Souths Cares programs were very well presented with positive messages for our students. We loved the positive role modelling and having both male and female presenters”, Stuart said.

On the Wednesday evening, Souths Cares and the NRL development team were joined by the South Sydney Rabbitohs playing group at Ingenia Holidays Rivershore Resort for a Junior League Clinic and a meet and greet with the Rabbitohs team.

Over 300 children and youth attended the clinic with a further 500 people attending the meet and greet session with the Rabbitohs team. The event highlighted the great support Souths Cares and the Rabbitohs have within Queensland, with people travelling from across the state to attend.

On Thursday Souths Cares received a great welcome at Stella Maris Primary School in Maroochydore, with students participating well in the discussions on healthy relationships, mental health and wellbeing which have been important focus areas for the school prior to Souths Cares’ visit.

The health promotion tour concluded at Golden Beach State School on Thursday afternoon, where Souths Cares was again warmly welcomed into the school by students and teachers who were appreciative of the efforts and distance the team had covered to visit their school.

With over 2,000 primary and high school students engaged throughout the week, Souths Cares’ regional tour was a huge success. A special mention and thanks goes to the Central Queensland NRL Development Team for their hard work during the week.

The week was capped off with a great on-field performance and victory by the South Sydney Rabbitohs, with the team already looking forward to the opportunity to return to the Sunshine Coast.

The Rabbitohs Wellbeing Program is proudly supported by the Ian and Shirley Norman Foundation.
