Commitment and Sacrifice Pay off for Barranggirra Participant

Justin Bayliss is a mature-age learner who has overcome a number of challenges to commence his Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeship at the age of 26.

Prior to commencing his apprenticeship last month, Justin had a period of two years of unemployment and was living a chaotic lifestyle which stemmed from unresolved childhood trauma.

In 2020, Justin decided he wanted a better life for himself would have to make some hard decisions and sacrifices. He commenced regular counselling to overcome his past traumas and learnt productive strategies to deal with stress.

After undergoing significant personal growth, Justin was ready to commence employment and secured an Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeship in June with Roberts Air Conditioning. Recognizing there were still many challenges ahead, Justin also commenced working with Souths Cares Barranggirra Program for additional mentoring support.

Justin has established some important goals he wants to achieve through mentoring which include completing his apprenticeship, saving money and eventually buying a home.

Derick Peachey, Employment and Training Mentor for the Barranggirra Program has been impressed with Justin’s commitment to improving his life since joining the program.

"Justin is a true inspiration as a mature age apprentice. He had the courage to look himself in the mirror and decide he wanted a better life and continues to work hard at this each day”, Derick said.

A motivating factor for Justin to make changes to his life was to set a positive example for his nieces and nephews and show them the importance of hard work and education.

Justin explained he is enjoying the new chapter in his life.

“I’ve been loving learning on the job and have had the opportunity to travel already with work down to Southern NSW. The support from Souths Cares has made me believe that I can reach my goals”, Justin said.

The Barranggirra Program will continue supporting Justin for the next four years as he completes his Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Apprenticeship.

The Barranggirra Program is proudly supported by Training Services NSW.
