Souths Cares and Crown Resorts launched a partnership in July 2020 to support Aboriginal employment at their brand new hotel resort on the shores of Sydney Harbour at Barangaroo. The initiative includes securing at least 50 Indigenous traineeships in various roles across the property.
Souths Cares has placed over 600 Aboriginal candidates into employment through the highly successful New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) since the initiative was launched in 2015. They were thrilled to partner with Crown who has demonstrated success in delivering Aboriginal employment outcomes across their Melbourne and Perth property’s providing more than 920 employment opportunities. The partnership builds on the direct partnership between the Rabbitohs and Crown Resorts more broadly.
The first intake of nine trainees commenced their comprehensive training and development pathway in July to be ready to go when the Barangaroo property opens mid December 2020. The second cohort of five additional trainees recently commenced at the end of August. Further trainees will begin their journey early December 2020.
Klaiha Ridgeway is one of the first cohort of trainees and already has high aspirations within the tourism and hospitality industry.
“I came into the program knowing that I had as much support as possible around. Whatever help I needed I was able to get," Ridgeway said.
"In two years, I would like to see myself progress in the industry.
"Firstly, by being able to apply for a junior manager position then into a more senior management position further down the line.”
Chantelle Young, Aboriginal Employment and Training Advisor for the NCAP program said the initiative was about working collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes.
“We have been working alongside the Indigenous Program team at Crown to support our mentees transition into employment," said Young.
"We provide practical and holistic support to each mentee to ensure their transition into employment is successful and positive for both the employee and employer”
The third intake of trainees are due to commence shortly, with an estimated seventy new Aboriginal staff members to be employed at the Barangaroo site by the end of the year.
