War on the Wharves Boxing Event raises $25,000 for Souths Cares

The sixth ‘War on the Wharves’ charity boxing event was a huge success, with $25,000 raised to support Souths Cares in the delivery of mental health initiatives, within the local community. War on the Wharves Committee Members Angelo Dymock and Sean Windon visted Rabbitohs HQ to present the cheque to the Souths Cares team last week.

This year’s ‘War on the Wharves’ event was held at Souths Juniors where 24 brave and selfless members of Maritime Unions of Australia and New Zealand, jumped in the ring to challenge themselves and raise money for a good cause.

Angelo Dymock, War on the Wharves Committee Member explained the history of the event.

“The concept was first developed by members of the Maritime Union in 2010 to raise funds for charitable organisations,” said Mr. Dymock.

“During this time, the event has been hugely successful and raised over $150,000 in donations for Randwick Children’s Hospital.”

Souths Cares was selected as the charity partner this year after Maritime Industry Members (stevedores, linesmen and ferry workers) identified a need to bring awareness to mental health after being deeply impacted by issues relating to depression, anxiety and suicide.

Alisha Parker-Elrez, General Manager at Souths Cares was extremely grateful for the generosity shown by the Maritime Union.

“We would like to thank the War on the Wharves Committee, athletes and sponsors who made this event a huge success,” said Mrs. Parker-Elrez.

“We were amazed and humbled by the generosity shown by the Maritime Union and the funds raised will enable us to significantly expand our mental health programs next year.”

The event continues to grow in popularity, with ‘War on the Wharves IIV’ now expanding internationally where it will be hosted in Hawaii in 2020.
