Vale John Riordan

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are mourning the passing of former Club President and Life Member, John Riordan, today, aged 86.

John Riordan was a former Solicitor who also had a long association with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

He was a Member of both the South Sydney Football Club and Leagues Club since 1960, and his Club duties started in 1973 when he was appointed on the General Committee with the Rabbitohs.

This led to the Management Committee in 1974-76, Representative on the Junior Finance Committee in 1974-76, Retention Committee in 1974-76, Members Reviewing Committee in 1974-76, club Solicitor in 1977-80, Public Announcer at Redfern Oval in 1979-86, as well as the club President in 1974-76.

Mr Riordan was also Vice-President of the New South Wales Rugby League and on the General Committee of the Country Rugby League.

Mr Riordan was the Patron of the South Sydney Rabbitohs from 1982-2000, and he was inducted as a Life Member of the South Sydney Football Club at the 70th Annual General Meeting held at the South Sydney Leagues Club in Redfern on 11 December 1977. 

Mr Riordan was also inducted as a Life Member of the South Sydney Leagues Club and the New South Wales Rugby League.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will wear black armbands against the Wests Tigers on Saturday night at ANZ Stadium as well as in the Canterbury Cup on Sunday afternoon at the Metricon High Performance Centre at Redfern Oval against the Western Suburbs Magpies, and will observe a moment’s silence before kick-off, in memory of Mr Riordan.

Mr Riordan's funeral will be at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Randwick on Wednesday 29 May at 2pm. The wake will be held at The Juniors Kingsford afterwards.
