Souths Cares Joint Support Program continues to deliver great results for disadvantaged youth who come into contact with the Juvenile Justice system.
One particular client, Jay* (Not his real name), has overcome some significant barriers to turn his life around with the support of Souths Cares.
Experiencing a difficult childhood which included a number of foster care placements and multiple schools, Jay was associating with a negative peer group and was coming to the attention of the local Police.
Jay was referred to Souths Cares Joint Support Program and over the next four months worked intensively with his Employment and Training Advisor, Brent Logan, to find a career path, which was suited to his passions and strengths.
Souths Cares helped Jay to enter a mechanics pre-apprenticeship course. At the same time, Jay also worked with Brent to develop a resume and fine-tune his interview skills.
"It's a credit to Jay and his hard work that he has been able to turn his life around and start his apprenticeship," said Brent.
"Jay has grabbed this opportunity with both hands and hasn't looked back!"
The Joint Support Program has been facilitated by Souths Cares since 2016. During this time over 40 juvenile offenders have been supported to obtain employment.
After excelling in his pre-apprenticeship course, Jay was offered a trial with a mechanics workshop in Milperra, which eventually led him to secure a full-time apprenticeship.
The road hasn't been easy for Jay, but he continues to work hard on his employment goals and is making his family proud.
Jay explained the support he received from Souths Cares enabled him to create a positive future away from crime. '
"The program has provided me with great opportunities to start my career as an apprentice. I would not be where I am today without Souths Cares' help," said Jay.
The Joint Support Program is delivered by Souths Cares in partnership with Parramatta Juvenile Justice.
