Wherever in the world you may be, there is a good chance you will find a South Sydney Rabbitohs supporter. As Canberra resident Jerry Lissing discovered, in the ACT, there’s many.
However, Mr Lissing didn’t just find a handful, he found over 7500 people who bleed Red and Green. The former Rabbitohs Director promptly acted by setting up a South Sydney supporters' group right in the heart of the nation’s capital.
“There are so many Rabbitohs supporters in Canberra,” said Mr Lissing.
“Whenever the Rabbitohs play in Canberra there are just as many Souths supporters as there are Raiders fans.”
After moving to down to the ACT just over three years ago, Mr Lissing and his wife Wendy, another die-hard Souths supporter, found it tough to always get out to games to celebrate with the Red and Green family. So they thought why not bring the family to them.
“There’s a little group that still exists called the rascally rabbits but I wasn’t involved with them,” Mr Lissing added.
“I was talking to my wife one night and we said gee it’d be really good if we could find a venue because you see a lot of people around Canberra wearing Rabbitohs gear and have the stickers on their cars.”
After discovering the spread of Rabbitohs supporters in Canberra and the surrounding regions, Mr Lissing began setting up the Canberra Rabbitohs and found a venue for the group's official launch party.
“We thought rather than us sit at home and watch the game, it would be really good to get together with others and to watch the team,” Mr Lissing explained.
“My good friend Peter Barclay owns the King O’Malley, which is the largest pub right in the centre of Canberra.
“He was an absolute legend and extremely willing to help us out, so we have hired out a room there where there will be plenty of food and drink on offer and we can’t wait to meet other Rabbitohs supporters.”
The launch party is set for Tuesday 6 March and will also feature South Sydney Rabbitohs Chief Executive Officer Blake Solly and Rabbitohs legend Roy Asotasi as a guest speakers.
“Rabbitohs are known for having one of the biggest and best supporter bases in the entire NRL,” said Mr Lissing.
“We’re hoping that our group down here will eventually be able to link up with those around the country to really build the Rabbitohs supporter burrow.”
