Gwen turns 90 with South Cares fund raiser
Long-time Rabbitohs Member Gwen Butler celebrated her 90th Birthday over the weekend with a Rabbitohs themed birthday party - and raised over $1000 for Souths Cares on the day.
From the decorations, to the napkins to the birthday cake - everything was red and green!
Friends and family shared many fond memories about Gwen and her loyal following of the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
After moving to Sydney from Bowraville in 1957, Gwen fell in love with the South Sydney Rabbitohs and has been following the team ever since.
During this time Gwen has experienced all the highs and lows, including marching with other Rabbitohs fans in 2000 to protest of the Club’s removal from the NRL and the recent fond memories of winning the 2014 Premiership.
“We were at the Leagues Club when it happened. It was such a happy moment, everyone was cheering and hugging each other!” beamed Gwen.
Gwen showed great generosity by requesting all her guests make a donation to the Souths Cares charity instead of purchasing her a gift.
“When you get to my age, there is nothing more you really need. I’d much rather use this occasion to help the disadvantaged rather than receive presents myself,” Gwen explained.
Over $1,000 was raised for the Souths Cares charity through Gwen and her guest’s generosity.
Gwen received special birthday messages from John Sutton, Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess and was thrilled to have her 90th Birthday recognised by her beloved Rabbitohs.
“I couldn’t pick a favourite player. I love all the Rabbitohs players who wear the red and green,” said Gwen.
‘[Sam Burgess] is as tough as they come on the field, but he has been an absolute gentleman off the field on the couple of occasions we have met.”
