How’s this for a piece of history? Platinum Member Sandra came into the Rabbitohs Merchandise Store in Redfern yesterday (Wednesday) wearing this 2001 Rabbitohs Supporter Cap!
Sandra, who hails from Lake Macquarie, purchased the cap in 2000 from the South Sydney Leagues Club to wear while marching in the historic, fightback rallies.
The black cap with 'Rabbitohs 2001' stitched on the front is a brilliant example of the fighting spirit of the Souths community - especially the'we'll be back' promise written on the back!
Then, it was about supporting the Club she’d followed since she moved to Waterloo as a 12-year old. Now, it’s a piece of memorabilia that Sandra holds close to her heart.
“I got the hat at the Leagues Club and I wore it in the marches. I was living in Lake Macquarie when we got kicked out and my family used to come down for the rallies,” smiled Sandra.
“After that I put it away and over the years wore my Membership cap now and again, but every so often I’d get it out again and wear it again.
“It’s getting a bit old now and I really want to keep it so sometimes it’s better kept away. I haven’t seen any others around for a long time now so they’re all probably doing the same!”
For Sandra, being a part of the Souths family is in the blood. She grew up with the Rabbitohs in Waterloo, she took her son to games at Redfern Oval and now her grandson is a Gold Member with the Club.
“My son was born down here in Sydney. We came to a few games at Redfern when he was young. We have a rule: If you join our family you have to follow Souths,” chuckled Sandra.
