Sunday 3 August 2014 is a day that will stick in the memories of Rabbitohs Members and fans in far north Queensland as they turned out in their droves to see the Rabbitohs defeat the Knights 50 points to 10 at Barlow Park in Cairns.
An Alex Johnston hat-trick and a Kirisome Auva’a double were among a number of highlights played out in the humid conditions.
Auva’a opened the scoring, with Lote Tuqiri crossing for the Rabbitohs second try midway through the first half.
Thomas Burgess was next to follow, and Adam Reynolds’ conversion gave the home side a 14-nil lead.
Dylan Walker would score the next try for Souths, followed by a try to Chris McQueen, giving South Sydney a 26-nil lead at the half time break.
Newly appointed captain Greg Inglis was the first to score in the second half, taking the score line out to 32-nil.
The Knights would then score two tries through Jake Mamo and Adam Clydsdale, before Alex Johnston returned order to the afternoon, crossing for his first try of the afternoon to take the scoreline to 36-10.
Second and third tries to Johnston midway through the second half, followed by a second four-pointer for Auva’a saw the Rabbitohs hit the half century on the scoreboard, defeating the Knights 50-10.
