KARI Aboriginal Resources,will this week feature on South Sydney’s Indigenous jersey alongside Recognise thanks to Rabbitohs co-major partner Crown Resorts, who have donated their place on the Club’s strip for this week’s Indigenous Round.
KARI’s main focus is Aboriginal child protection, youth education, child and family support, and community strengthening. KARI’s message of ‘Changing Lives, Keeping Culture’ will be displayed on the Rabbitohs Indigenous Jersey this Thursday night. The ‘Keeping Culture’ message emphasises KARI’s commitment to providing Indigenous Carers for their Indigenous Foster Care Children so as Indigenous Children are brought up being taught to be proud of their culture.
For KARI CEO, Paul Ralph, inspiring Indigenous people through education is of vital importance, particularly given the lack of education he himself received while at school – the proud Indigenous man recalling that French culture played a more prominent role in his education than that of his own.
“It wasn’t until the 1970s that Aboriginal culture was really strongly taught in the education system,” said Paul.
“We think that’s a great influence now, not just Aboriginal kids that grow up knowing their culture, but it’s also important for the rest of Australia to know about their Indigenous culture – so important.
“How exciting that we have so many Indigenous players playing for South Sydney,” said Paul.
“The message this year that we want to try and get is the importance of culture and the importance of being strong in our community – we highlight that on the jersey.
“It’s not just the Indigenous community coming together on this occasion – it’s everybody coming together to celebrate this wonderful culture.”
The jersey that will be worn by the Rabbitohs this week is designed by Sydney-based Indigenous designer, Nikita Ridgeway, and tells the stories of six of the Club’s Indigenous players including captain Inglis, Indigenous All Stars representatives Kyle Turner, Alex Johnston, Chris Grevsmuhl and Dane Nielsen, as well as Rabbitohs 2016 debutant Cody Walker.
