Walker – I Want to Fight for That Jersey

For proud Indigenous Rabbitoh, Cody Walker, wearing the Club’s 2016 Indigenous jersey is more than a source of pride, it represents who he is and instils a sense of belonging.

The Nikita Ridgeway-designed jersey will be worn as part of South Sydney’s own Indigenous Round celebrations in Round 11 against the Dragons – a jersey that tells the stories of six of the Club’s Indigenous players including captain Greg Inglis, Indigenous All Stars representatives Kyle Turner, Alex Johnston, Chris Grevsmuhl and Dane Nielsen, as well as Walker.

For recent debutant Walker, the importance of the strip hit home when he got his hand-print done in preparation for the jersey to be put together.

“You get a real sense of pride when they’re doing the print and you see that hand-print on the jersey with my two tribes,” admitted Walker.

“You really want to fight for that jersey. It represents my background – I’m from Bundjalung and the Yuin tribe.

“You find a sense of belonging to that area and growing up as an Aboriginal man, you had cousins that were your brothers and cousins that were your sisters essentially.

“So I’m not just playing for my brothers and sisters, I’m playing for my whole family.”

The importance of Indigenous heritage is close to Walker’s heart as he continues to discover his heritage – the proud father of two emphasising that he wants his own children and Indigenous kids everywhere to know their story too.

“It’s very important to the young kids that are coming through because as I was coming through in a small town in Casino, we learnt a lot about our Aboriginal heritage,” said Walker.

“I think it’s really important that we try and work something out where we’re learning it – even me, I’m sort of still learning it to this day.”

Two important Australian organisations with a focus on Indigenous people and causes, KARI Aboriginal Resources and Recognise, also feature on the jersey thanks to Rabbitohs co-major partner Crown Resorts.
