South Sydney’s SG Ball (under 18s) side is through to the Preliminary Finals following a dominant 24-8 finals victory over the Parramatta Eels at Leichhardt Oval today (Saturday).
The Matt King-coached Rabbitohs now find themselves just one game away from the competition’s Grand Final, with the Illawarra Steelers the only team standing in their way – the upcoming match slated for Saturday, April 30 at 11:30am at Campbelltown Stadium.
In a match played in wet and windy conditions – as well as in true Finals-like intensity – King’s men ran in four tries to two, with Dylan O’Connor, Dean Hawkins, Mawene Hiroti and Cam Murray all try-scorers, while Hiroti continued his fine form with the boot by kicking four goals.
After a fast and furious first half, the Rabbitohs went to the break leading 10-0 before going on with the job to secure their place in the next stage of the competition.
The result follows a steadily improving build-up that began last week when the Rabbitohs were pipped at the post in golden-point extra-time by the Minor Premiership-winning Newcastle Knights.
Former Test and Rabbitohs player, King, was proud of his team’s efforts to remain in control of the match despite the difficult conditions.
“The boys showed immense composure in the conditions,” said King speaking to Rabbitohs.com.au.
“Led by Cam Murray, they adapted well and still managed to play the game with finals-intensity to come away with the win.
“It’s easy to move away from what you’ve practiced in situations like the ones we faced today, but the boys showed tremendous focus and mental toughness to stick to the plan.
“That’s what we’ll now be looking to build on for our next game.”
A proud King has urged the Rabbitohs faithful to throw their support behind his young-guns as they go in search of a Grand Final berth next week at Campbelltown Stadium.
“We’ve had fantastic support throughout the season from Members and supporters, and we need that now more than ever,” said King.
“That support really does mean a lot to the boys, so get your Red and Green on and head out to Campbelltown Stadium and help the boys over the line against the Steelers.”
