South Sydney’s SG Ball (under 18s) and Harold Matthews (under 16s) teams notched up massive wins in Round 7 of their respective competitions over the weekend, scoring a combined total of 116 points while only conceding 10.
The Jason Peterson-coached Harold Matthews side sent the Redfern Oval scoreboard into over-drive on Saturday with their 72-0 victory over the South West Sydney Academy of Sport. Kaylib Savage grabbed a hat-trick, while Paul Turner, Maila Chan-Foon, and Harry Larkin all grabbed doubles to help their side to massive victory.
Peterson was proud of his team’s efforts to bounce back from a two-point loss to the Dragons from the previous week.
“We spoke during the week about what we wanted to do and the boys went out and did just that,” said Peterson.
“We lived up to the standards that we’ve set for ourselves and that came about by us executing early on in the game and going on with it.
“What was also pleasing was that we went on with the job in the second half. There’s a tendency for teams to drop off a bit after the break, but I’m proud to say that the boys stuck to the game-plan and showed great mental toughness to get on with the job at hand.”
Of particular interest was the performance of Peterson’s rotating halves who controlled the game well for the men in Red and Green.
“We had a total of four blokes playing in the halves during the course of the game and each one of them stood up,” said Peterson.
“They controlled the game well, directed traffic, got us to the end of our sets and showed some good creativity within our structures.”
Meanwhile, the Matt King-coached SG Ball side notched up a 44-10 victory over West Coast, with Lee Turner, Tarquinn Butler, and Phoenix Hunt all grabbing doubles.
Just two more games remain before the end of the regular 2016 Junior Rep season, with both Souths teams eligible to play in the finals.
