The Souths and St George tradition isn’t lost on any of the proud Members and supporters of both Clubs, but it’s not lost on the players either – just ask Rabbitohs winger, Alex Johnston.
Johnston will line up on the Red and Green flank this Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground when the Rabbitohs face a Dragons outfit looking to get their winning account for season 2016 started.
“Whenever we verse the Dragons it’s always a heated battle,” said Johnston.
“We have a great rivalry – especially here at the SCG. I’ve played a couple of times and every time it’s a good game.”
After a long-standing and proud rivalry stretching back to 1921 – the year St George entered the top-flight NSWRL competition – in 1999, a new era was welcomed when the Rabbitohs took on the newly-formed St George Illawarra Dragons for the first time, a merger between the St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers who had entered the Premiership in 1982.
The Rabbitohs will be looking to build on their first two victories of the year after overcoming both the Roosters and the Knights in consecutive weeks.
Johnston and his teammates are proud of their performances so far, citing an increase in belief and a positive pre-season as the reason for their well-received start.
“Just a lot of belief and confidence in ourselves,” said Johnston when asked what the mindset at Redfern is.
“We know that if we play our best footy that we’re going to win – that’s the mindset that we’re going out (with) each game.
“Really it’s just come down to our pre-season. We’ve trained really well and we’ve just got confidence and belief within each other.”
