South Sydney’s junior rep sides – SG Ball (under 18s), and Harold Matthews (under 16s) – were both downed by Newcastle over the weekend in Round 5 of their respective competitions at Cessnock Sports Ground.
Despite both going into the half-time break leading their much fancied opponents, the men in Red and Green were unable to hold on, with the SG Ball eventually going down 42-22, while the Harold Matthews Cup side went down 20-14.
SG Ball centre, Mawene Hiroti, continued his positive run of form for the under 18s side by amassing a 14 point haul of points thanks to his two tries and three goals, while Kurtis Preece and Rangi Paoa Boyce also picked up tries in the match.
While disappointed with the loss, SG Ball Coach Matt King believes that his side will learn plenty from the game.
“We came up against a really good team and it proved to be a great learning curve for us,” said King.
“Irrespective of the score-line, it’s really only a bad game if we don’t learn something from it, and I think that we’ll definitely take plenty out of that game.
“Individually we need to improve, but also as a team there’s obviously plenty that we can work on to fine tune things moving forward.
“It’s all about next week against the Dragons now.”
In the under 16s, Reihana Leuii, Raine Dellow and Paul Turner picked up four-pointers for the Rabbitohs, while Jensen Taumoepeau kicked the side’s sole goal.
