Souths Cares Ambassadors, Nathan Merritt and Beau Champion, were on hand to help celebrate Cultural Day with students from Redfern Jarjum College earlier in the week.
Each Thursday, the school recognises the uniqueness of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures by raising the Indigenous Australian flags, sampling traditional food, and showcasing traditional dance and music.
Together with the Aboriginal community, Jarjum provide special assistance aimed at developing the students’ life skills.
Both Nathan and Beau attended the school’s cultural ceremony as a way of recognising the importance of knowing and understanding culture.
“We played basketball with the students, shared lunch, watched the students performing traditional dance and witnessed the raising of the flags,” said Champion.
“The leadership group and staff at Jarjum College do a terrific job educating young students who are not currently participating in mainstream primary schools and it’s a great thing to be a part of.”
College Principal, Fran McCarthy, said that the occasion was special for the school community.
“The day was a special Flag Raising Ceremony to honour and show our respects to both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of our school and country, past and present,” said Fran.
“The College enjoys having community participation in our special events and would like Souths Cares to visit whenever they can.”
The college, which is situated at the centre of Redfern is dedicated to the growth and well-being of local students.
