With Round 1 of the Telstra Premiership just over a week away, Rabbitohs winger Aaron Gray says he is excited and ready to play his role for the team when the men in Red and Green take on the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium.
The Souths Junior enjoyed game-time in the Club’s Charity Shield and Gold Coast Titans trial wins in recent weeks – games that the Mascot Jets product says have helped to blow out the off-season cobwebs.
“Pre-season has been long and enjoyable but it’s definitely been good to get back out there playing some footy again,” said Gray.
“I think everyone’s a bit rusty in the first couple of trials, but I think we’ve got all the cobwebs out and we’re ready to go in Round 1 against the Roosters.”
The make-up of Head Coach Michael Maguire’s outfit is still an unknown despite the trial period, with competition for positions strong across the field.
Of particular interest will be the Club’s outside backs, with Gray in competition with the likes of Bryson Goodwin, Hymel Hunt, John Olive, Kirisome Auva’a, Michael Oldfield, Alex Johnston and Greg Inglis – among others.
“There’s a lot of competition going on in the outside backs,” said Gray.
“It’s always healthy to have a lot of competition – it keeps everyone on their toes and we’re always helping each other out to get better. That’s what we’re here for, to get better – better each other and get better as a player each day.”
Maguire recently told the media that the trial period his given him plenty to think about.
“I reckon it’s given me some really good food for thought,” admitted Maguire.
“We had a lot of young guys come in throughout the pre-season and (they) worked extremely hard to achieve.
“There’s a lot of depth amongst our Club and through what we’ve put in through the Norths Bears and Souths Juniors. They add a lot to what we’re doing moving forward.
“Across positions we’ve got a lot of competition and I think that’s very healthy for bringing the best out of every individual.”
