South Sydney’s Harold Matthews and SG Ball Junior representative teams kicked off their respective seasons over the weekend against the Sydney Roosters, with positive signs coming from the first week of competition for the Club.

Playing in sweltering conditions at Henson Park, the Matt King coached SG Ball (under 18s) took the game by the scruff of the neck, posting eight tries to two to come away with a 44-10 victory.

Johnny Mitsias and Josh Cook both grabbed doubles, while Marwene Hiroti kicked six goals for the men in Red and Green.

Although pleased with the performance of his men, coach King is adamant that there is plenty of work to be done yet in the pursuit of fine-tuning and polishing his young squad.

“We scored a few points in the back end of the game there which was pleasing,” said King.

“It was 18-4 at half-time and our boys kicked on with it in the back half of the second half there.

“I was really pleased with what we’ve tried to achieve over the pre-season and the boys took that into the game. it’s all those little areas that we constantly talk about – supporting each other and defending for each other which I’ve really pressed upon the boys and they played really well in that regard.

“A few cobwebs there and a fair bit of rust there obviously only being our first game, so a fair bit to work on.”

In the Harold Matthews Cup (under 16s), Jason Peterson’s South Sydney side managed a 22 all draw with the Roosters – both teams scoring four tries and three goals to round out proceedings.

Stay tuned to for more from the 2016 junior representative season.
