The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ 2016 Auckland Nines team announcement is fast approaching, and desire to be a part of the experience is high – just ask Cody Walker!
After enjoying an MVP 2015 season for the Club’s feeder side, the North Sydney Bears, Walker is excited by the prospect of potentially having his name read out by Michael Maguire for this weekend’s Auckland Nines tournament at Eden Park. If selected, the playmaker will don the Club’s colours for the very first time in battle.
“I’m definitely excited by the chance to wear that red and green jersey,” said Walker.
“I’ve obviously never done it before, but if I get the nod for the Nines, It’ll definitely be a proud moment for me and my family.
“It’s a massive honour for me to just put the colours on at training, so it’ll be a big deal – my kids can’t wait to see it too. They love the Rabbitohs and can’t wait to see me run out sometime soon.”
In the first two years of the Auckland Nines tournament, the Rabbitohs managed to advance past the pool stages on both occasions, going down to hosts the New Zealand Warriors in the 2014 Quarter Finals, before winning a thrilling golden-point extra-time Grand Final in 2015 over Cronulla-Sutherland, with former Test player, Matt King, coming out of retirement to score the tournament-winning try.
For Walker – who watched the 2015 tournament from the comfort of his home – the chance to be a part of the ‘exciting’ concept in 2016 is one he would relish as a chance to play alongside his teammates.
“It’s very entertaining to watch – I remember watching it last year and thinking that I’d love to get the chance someday,” said Walker.
“Obviously the boys took it out last year and it was great to see Matty King come out of retirement and score that last try. Seeing how into it all the fans get over there as well is pretty special – there was a lot of red and green there last year.
“The boys have been preparing for it (the Nines) – it’s obviously a bit different to the normal game, but that’s part of the fun.
“I’ve enjoyed being alongside them at training and now I’m just getting really excited – if I do get selected, it’ll be very special to play alongside them in a game.
“We’ve all set ourselves goals as a team during the pre-season, so whether I’m one of the guys playing on the weekend or not, we’ll all be playing our role for the team.”
