The North Sydney Bears will kick-off their 2016 NSW Cup campaign against the reigning Premiers, the Newcastle Knights in a home match.
The venue and kick-off time for the season opening clash is yet to be confirmed, however is set to feature a number of budding Rabbitohs players as they make a claim for a spot in first grade.
The North Sydney Bears are South Sydney’s feeder team and are coached by former Rabbitohs NYC mentor, Ben Gardiner, who helped to lift the side off the bottom of the NSW Cup ladder last season.
Norths finished in eighth position on 26 competition points with nine wins – a result that seemed a distant thought during the early stages of the 2015 season to make it to Week 1 of the Finals.
“It was pleasing to get the Club back into a good position again and to now be considered among one of the better Clubs in the NSW Cup,” said a proud Gardiner.
“I think we’ve laid a good platform this year for where we want to be next season. We took some giant steps forward this year and that work continues now.”
Fox Sports will again broadcast each round's blue-ribbon clash live and exclusive in high definition throughout the entire regular season and finals series.
“After the success of the 2015 NSW Cup season, we’re looking forward to the start of the 2016 season, fully expecting it to be bigger and better than before,” NSWRL General Manager of Football Barrie-Jon Mather said.
“Attendances and viewing figures have been rising steadily for this competition over the last three years, off the back of traditional names such as North Sydney and Newtown, NRL powerhouses such as Canterbury and Penrith and local big names such as Wentworthville and Mount Pritchard.
“We feel that the make-up of the competition is ideal and it’s now acknowledged to be the leading competition in Australia for developing talent.”
