The coveted Ron Coote Cup will be decided within the first six Rounds of the 2016 NRL season, with the Rabbitohs set to face traditional Foundation rivals, the Sydney Roosters in Rounds 1 and 6 of the new-year in two local derby epics.
The game’s oldest and fiercest rivalry will re-ignite in Round 1 on Sunday March 6 at 4pm at Allianz Stadium, in what will be Sam Burgess’ return to the NRL, before the men in red and green again face off against the Tricolours at our home, ANZ Stadium, on Friday 8 April in the deciding clash, with kick-off slated for 7.50pm.
The Ron Coote Cup is named after Club legend, Ron Coote. A product of Kensington United, Coote is revered as a local legend, having played for, captained and won Premierships with both the Rabbitohs and Roosters between 1964 and 1978. The Souths Junior was also an accomplished representative player, having represented NSW (15 caps) Australia (23, including World Cup matches) in addition to holding the honour of Captaining his country.
In the Club’s other confirmed match, the Rabbitohs will return to the SCG on March 20 for yet another traditional Sunday afternoon clash, this time against St George Illawarra, continuing a long history of epic battles between the two teams played in the area that includes countless ‘match of the day’ games as well as Grand Finals.
