The draw for the 2016 Auckland Nines tournament has today (Wednesday) been released, with the Rabbitohs set to take on arch rivals the Roosters, as well as the Eels and Storm in the Waiheke pool of the tournament.
The men in red and green will defend their Auckland Nines crown in New Zealand next February between Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th, with the Rabbitohs and Roosters set to clash in the opening game of the tournament at 12:30pm (NZ), in what is sure to be an epic traditional encounter.
Michael Maguire’s men will then face off against the Melbourne Storm in Game 10 of the tournament at 4:50pm (NZ) to round out Day 1 for the Club.
Souths’ third and final game of the pool stage will be against the Parramatta Eels in Game 18, with kick-off slated for 11:00am (NZ), before the knock-out stage of the tournament begins that afternoon.
The Rabbitohs will be looking to replicate their 2015 Auckland Nines effort, a tournament that saw them go through undefeated to eventually win a thrilling Grand Final by 18-14 in extra time, courtesy of a fairy-tale Matt King try.
South Sydney’s dominant display throughout the tournament resulted in a number of individual accolades, with Adam Reynolds, Isaac Luke and George Burgess named in the team of the tournament, and Reynolds also collecting the tournament MVP.
