Chifley Public School is just one example of how Souths Cares is making it possible for students to receive a nutritious breakfast every school day.
Thanks to sponsors, William Buck Sydney, students can go to school and enjoy the most important meal of the day at school.
“Having William Buck supporting Souths Cares’ breakfast program ensures schools like Chifley Public, are able to successfully establish the program in their school community,” said Souths Cares General Manager Brock Schaefer.
“Breakfast is without doubt the most important meal of the day, especially when you’re going to school, so there are many good reasons why charities such as ours should work in partnership with schools to help deliver that message.
“Research has shown that children who participate in a school breakfast program, are less likely to be overweight, have improved nutrition, eat more fruits, drink more milk and consume a wider variety of foods.
“At Chifley, students are typically provided with a number of options for breakfast, which includes fresh fruit, cereal, toast and milk.”
“Other studies conclude that students who eat breakfast increase their maths and reading scores as well as improve their speed and memory in cognitive tests, and a number of educators from our catchment have reported to us that they notice changes in classroom behaviour of some students who are now eating a regular breakfast.
“In some schools they also report decreases in incidences of poor discipline and tardiness, increases in student attentiveness and attendance, and generally improved learning environments.
“These are all positive outcomes for everyone involved.
“Often families are living on tight budgets and can’t afford to provide a good breakfast at home every day so for Souths Cares to have the ability to help in some small way, is what we’re all about –helping community where we can.”
