The Gift of Life & Membership
Meet Charlie Rose McMahon, the newborn baby girl who just hours after coming into the world was given the gift of Membership by one proud grandfather.
Jerry Lissing – a former Club Director who played a key role in Souths’ fight for re-instatement – wasted no time in carrying on the family tradition by making his first phone-call following meeting his granddaughter to Rabbitohs Membership.
“I told the family, that the day she was born would be the day that we’d sign her up as a Member,” Jerry told Rabbitohs.com.au.
“After we had all the ‘ooing and aaing’ over the baby at the hospital, the very first opportunity I had to jump on the phone, I did, and the first call I made was to South Sydney Membership to sign up Charlie Rose McMahon as a Member.”
Asked why it was so important to give Charlie Rose the gift of Membership so quickly, the proud grandfather pointed to the importance of the Club to not just his own family, but to the many thousands in the community who identify as being Rabbitohs.
“It’s extremely important for us because it means that we carry on a proud family tradition,” said Jerry.
“My brother and I have been following Souths for over 50 years and were fortunate enough to be part of the organisation from the early 90s to 2000s during our fightback.
“We’re all proud Members, so with that in mind, we know how much South Sydney means not just to us, but to many thousands of people.
“We fought so hard for Souths to be reinstated. We vowed that we would be South Sydney ‘til we die and we can now have our family be a part of that tradition.
“South Sydney is part of the fabric of our society. Sport is tribal and we’re probably the number one tribe in Rugby League and among the best sporting brands in the country.
“It gives people a sense of belonging and it brings people together of all ethnicities, backgrounds, socio-economic groups – it doesn’t matter who you are or where you’re from, if you’re a South Sydney Member, you’ve got a bond.
“It’s equal, it’s inclusive, and it’s what being part of South Sydney means.”
Jerry is now looking forward to sharing a strong Rabbitohs bond with his granddaughter in the years to come.
Just one day after going on sale on Thursday, over 1000 Members had already jumped on board for the new season, with over 100 of those being new Members – the Club’s 2016 Membership target now standing at 38,000.
