Rabbitohs SG player, Cam Murray, had a hand in the Australian Schoolboy’s first try during a dominant win over the New Zealand Kiwis Under 18s side earlier in the week – the Aussies coming away with a 70-24 victory.
Murray, who helped Souths’ SG Ball under 18s side to a Grand Final appearance this year, played his part for the green and gold’s in the back-row by backing up his teammates to keep a loose-ball alive that would eventually result in first points at Suncorp Stadium.
Australian Schoolboys Coach, Brian Battese, praised his team’s ability to back-up and keep the ball alive when he spoke to Qrl.com.au post-match.
“The thing I was happy with was the way they supported one another,” said Battese.
“The inside balls, and people just turning up for one another rather than just making breaks and running all the way – It was a good team performance.”
Murray, a Mascot Jets junior, was a standout performer in Souths’ SG Ball Grand Final side this year, and was selected in the back row for Australia following the 18 Years Championships played in Wollongong in July where he represented NSW CIS.
Murray scored six tries in four matches throughout the tournament, winning player of the match on two occasions to eventually earn himself Australian selection.
The second Test of the series will be played at BMD Kougari Oval at Wynnum at 6.30pm tonight (Thursday).
