With 26 rounds of football now consigned to history, all red and green attention has now shifted to the upcoming NRL Finals Series campaign that kicks off against the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks this Sunday afternoon at Allianz Stadium.
It’s a whole new ball-game now according to Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, as his side prepares to take on a Cronulla outfit going in search of their maiden Premiership.
For Maguire and his men, the Finals is what it’s all about and with some seasoned campaigners in the squad, focus is sharp as they look to build on their regular season.
“We’re very focused on what’s ahead of us now,” said Maguire.
“Now moving forward, there’s teams that leave the competition and we start into the Finals Series and that’s what it’s really all about.
“You work 26 rounds to give yourself the opportunity. Once you get into that Finals Series, things open up and it’s about playing your best footy and that’s what the Finals will be bringing out of the team.
“A lot of the boys have been in and around this area, so we’ll utilise that experience and find the game that we know we can play.”
The Rabbitohs will have the benefit of seasoned Finals campaigners such as Greg Inglis and Glenn Stewart – both of whom have made a habit of playing in the post-season since the mid-2000s – as well as boasting a number of young-guns with plenty of Finals experience such as Adam Reynolds and Dylan Walker.
And while Sunday’s match is deemed a Cronulla home-game (the men from The Shire having finished above the Rabbitohs in sixth), a distinctly red and green feel is expected to prevail at Allianz Stadium among the Finals crowd – the Rabbitohs having called the Moore Park venue home for over a decade through the late 80s to 2000s.
With the match being played in Rabbitohs heart-land – just a stone’s throw away from Redfern Oval – Maguire is expecting the Red and Green Army to be out in full-force and has called for as much.
“It’s all a part of what we do here,” said Maguire of the high level of support.
“We got a massive wave of support last year and it’s about the same again. For all the red and green and all the Members and the special fans that we have, please come out because it’s a big part of what we do.
“The boys do get that lift off the noise in the grandstand, so everything you can bring, that’s what this period’s all about.”
