Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, was on hand at Redfern Oval on Saturday 25th July to take in the Souths Juniors Mini League Grand Finals, and was humbled to be asked by South Juniors President, Keith McCraw, to present trophies and medals to the future crop of Rabbitohs in the Under 6s from Mascot and Maroubra.

Maguire acknowledged Junior Rugby League as not only the birthplace of Rugby League careers, but the beginning of friendships forged in sport.

“This is certainly where it all starts for Rugby League players, but it’s much more than that,” said Maguire.

“Getting the chance to play with your mates and making new ones along the way is part of what makes junior Rugby League so special.

“The kids are obviously very proud to feel a part of something by having a run around in their club colours and they start to learn about team-work, friendship, dedication and commitment – all that’s a big part of growing up and helps in development both on and off the field.

“It was really pleasing to see the sportsmanship and friendship that was shown on the day between players, clubs and the parents, as well as the many volunteers who make days like that possible. It’s what our game’s all about.”

Asked if any future Rabbitohs may have been on display on the hallowed Redfern Oval turf on the day, the Rabbitohs mentor replied with certainty.

“I’m sure there were a few,” said Maguire.

“There were some fantastic efforts by all the boys and girls and I know all our junior league coaches in Souths Juniors will look to nurture and develop that over the coming years.

“I look forward to seeing a few in the red and green of South Sydney.”

The look into the future continues this Sunday at Redfern Oval when Souths Juniors’ Mod League teams (Under 9s – Under 12s) take to Redfern Oval to contest a total of eight Grand Finals in pursuit of Premiership glory.

Rabbitohs players Chris Grevsmuhl, Paul Carter and Cameron McInnes will be on hand to present trophies and medals on the day, so get out to Redfern Oval and cheer on our future stars this Sunday from 9am.
