Rabbitohs Head Coach, Michael Maguire, spoke to the Rugby League media this morning (Thursday) ahead of Saturday night’s clash against the Newcastle Knights at ANZ Stadium.
Maguire praised Newcastle’s last round performance against the Gold Coast Titans, with the Knights’ defence proving impenetrable – the Gold Coast managing to score just one penalty goal in a 30-2 loss at Hunter Stadium.
“They were very good,” said Maguire.
“They hung onto the ball and completed high and played a fairly expansive game of Rugby League, so defensively we’re aware that they can shift the ball around and we’ve got to be spot on.
“We’re expecting that they’ll obviously build on last week, and we’ve got to do the same. We were able to control the ball and defend the way we (wanted) to – we’ve got to make sure we do that again this weekend because we’re playing against a team that’s moving the ball around.”
Maguire put part of Newcastle’s success on the shoulders of playmaker, Jarrod Mullen, whose try and try-assist – coupled with a brilliant kicking game – put the Knights on the front foot.
“He’s pretty clever with the ball,” said Maguire.
“He kicked them into some great field position and allowed them to sort of get some pressure on the opposition, so we’ve got to make sure that we’re nullifying that by how we go about things.”
The Rabbitohs grabbed their own win in Round 20 by downing the St George Illawarra Dragons at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Saturday night by 24-8.
