The North Sydney Bears went down to the Wentworthville Magpies at North Sydney Oval on Sunday in a tight affair by 27-20.

An early hat-trick to bright-spark Magpies halfback Beau Henry put the visitors on the right foot early, and despite a spirited come-back from the Bears, they never fully recovered from the early onslaught.

All of North Sydney’s points came from Rabbitohs players, with Cody Walker bagging a try-scoring double, while Joel Reddy and Jack Gosiewski also crossed for four-pointers. Darren Nicholls kicked two goals to round out the Bears’ points.

The Bears started the match well, scoring first inside the opening 10 minutes of play with Walker’s first try – Nicholls unable to convert leaving the score at 4-0 early.

But the advantage would be short-lived.

Just two minutes later, Magpies Henry crossed the line for the first of his three tries. Henry converted his own try to take the lead for his side by 6-4.

Henry was having the game of his life and was at it again in the 17th and 25th minutes by grabbing two more four-pointers. Despite his prowess in general play though, his kicking failed to procure more points when it came to the conversions, leaving the score at 16-4.

The Bears’ problems would be compounded two minutes from half-time when a penalty to the Magpies saw Henry take the opportunity to kick his team further ahead by 18-4 going into the sheds.

Norths rallied upon returning to the field in the second half and it would be five-eighth Walker who would go in for his second – Nicholls adding the extras to narrow the gap to eight points.

The fightback continued and by the 55th minute, Joel Reddy was defying the Magpies defence out wide to slide in next to the corner-post to bring the score to 18-14.

Wenty would go in again to take their lead out to 22-14, but Norths weren’t quite done. Jack Gosiewski slid over for a try of his own for the red and black’s before Nicholls added the extras to make it 22-20 in Wenty’s favour.

The day would ultimately belong to the Magpies though – the visitors scoring another try as well as a field-goal to Henry to bring the final score to 27-20.

Wentworthville Magpies 27 (Beau Henry 3, Fabian Goodall, Vai Toutai tries; Beau Henry 3 goals; Beau Henry field goal)

North Sydney Bears 20 (Cody Walker 2, Joel Reddy, Jack Gosiewski tries; Darren Nicholls 2 goals)
