A Member’s Perspective – Bye #2

Our game is a funny one. It can bring emotions from the extremes. One minute you can be riding an enormous high and then wiped right out the next week, the next half, even the next set. You can have the highest expectations, because you have the best team on paper and then be disappointed and toppled by the underdogs.

We weren’t at our best against Penrith. We could have done a lot better. We shouldn’t have given them so much, yet we did. However, I did tell you last week that this time last year we were in this exact same position, and we all know how that season ended.

So is this where we turn things around? Do we have this bye and then come out all guns blazing?

Well we did last year. We beat Parramatta, Canberra, Manly, Newcastle and Brisbane and each one of them were solid wins. From here on in we went on to lose only two games before the finals.

This was also the time we had McQueen, Inglis and Te’o return from origin. We have not been as disrupted with Origin this year, but this is how I see it. We have had Inglis out, and Reynolds has had to settle back in after two byes and an injury stint. Our most represented player and our general. Two super important positions. So, with them back in, we’re ready to go.

We also have players like George Burgess. He is our leader in terms of our go-forward. With 2300m so far this season, 521 tackles and 215 hits ups, he is unmatched. Obviously his brother is in a close second with 2141m, 420 tackles and 206 hit ups so we are looking to these men to get the field position we need to let GI and Reynolds run riot.

Out of interest it is not a forward who is 3rd for meters run, it is GI himself. So, with my fingers crossed as tightly as possible, I hope that with George and Tom leading by example, they can urge the others to join their 2000 club and get some more runs under their belts, and big ones at that.

Can you imagine having the honour to sit in ANZ Stadium again this year, cheering on the Rabbitohs in September and October? Can you imagine living the emotions, the joy, exhilaration, adrenalin, ecstasy that we were so lucky to live last year? Well, it’s time to push for that dream to come true. All of us!

Get out to the games, each and every one that you can. No excuses! It’s raining? Wear a poncho! It’s cold? Wear a coat! There is traffic? Catch a train! It’s in Townsville? Have a Holiday! Too busy? It’s a bye this weekend, so try and get your commitments done now! Our boys need us, and we need them.

We started writing history last season, but the book has many more blank pages, and I want them full!

Enjoy the weekend off and don’t come back without an appetite, as the time is now.

Up the MIGHTY Rabbitohs!
