Rabbitohs Assistant Coach Kurt Wrigley has made the best of a short preparation as Queensland under 20s Coach for tonight’s under 20s Origin match at Suncorp Stadium.
With a majority of his players coming from the Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys teams, Wrigley has used that fact to his advantage by not re-inventing the wheel but rather playing to the strengths of the combinations that already exist.
“We’re doing all we can to get the guys together,” said Wrigley.
“We’re quite lucky we’ve got nine or ten blokes from the Broncs (Brisbane Broncos), so that’s been a little easier.
“We’ve really had two sessions to train, so I haven’t come in with my play-book at all. It’s been sitting down with the boys and (working out) what’s been working for them – we’ve even gone with their calls.
“They’ve been good – their input has been really high and I’ve just sort of massaged them into something that I want - that I’m looking for on the field.”
Wrigley emphasised the importance of resilience and defence for the upcoming match, with the Coach intent on strengthening Queensland’s showing in comparison to previous seasons.
“We just want the group to be resilient really,” said Wrigley.
“The last few years hasn’t been pretty for the under 20s – they’ve given up a lot of points at the back end of the game and even the start of the game they’ve been physically beaten.
“They’re the two areas that we need to improve on and getting their attitude right for that start of the game.
“I said to the group when I first got there; ‘you’ve been hand-picked’ not only for your footy ability’.
“We’ve tried to pick people who I think are going to stand up in those big moments when the pressure hits.”
