St Aidan’s Maroubra have been crowned Bob McCarthy Cup champions in front of a building Rabbitohs crowd at ANZ Stadium tonight, defeating Mascot Public by 16-12 in a highly entertaining Grand Final.

The Bob McCarthy Cup is a seven a side Rugby League competition open to boys and girls in years five and six at primary school. Friday’s game will be 15 minutes long, with the victor set to raise the Bob McCarthy Cup as well as progressing through to the Legends Tournament later in the year.

St Aidan’s burst out of the blocks with a long range try courtesy of CJ Booth, the number 13 showing plenty of pace to open the school’s account for the evening. Damon Harsanyi converted to give the Saints an early 6-0 lead.

Mascot would respond almost immediately though through number seven, Ali Kumburlu, before Joshua Todd converted to level it all up at six apiece.

The Saints rallied by showing some  brilliant defence and enterprising attack, setting up Edward Schilt for a try before Kumburlu ran in for his second converted try late in the game to level it up at 12 apiece, setting up a thrilling finale.

With the clock winding down and pressure building on the Mascot defence, a strong attacking raid down the short-side from St Aidan’s saw Schilt cross for his second and most  decisive four-pointer - the try proving to be the match-winner -  in front the Rabbitohs faithful amid euphoric scenes from the St Aidan’s bench.

The trophy was presented by Rabbitohs legend, Bob McCarthy to St Aidan’s players and staff. The victory means the side now progresses to the Legends Tournament later in the year.

Congratulations to both St Aidan’s Maroubra and Mascot Public on a high quality encounter!
