Both the Rabbitohs’ SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup sides have progressed to the next round of Finals matches after tasting victory over the weekend.
The two wins sets up a Foundation Club double-header at Leichardt Oval where both Rabbitohs teams will take on the Balmain Tigers in elimination clashes – the victors set to advance to the next round for their chance to play in the Grand Final.
The Rabbitohs looked well in control in the SG Ball after shooting out to a 30-4 lead against the Newcastle Knights. Showing plenty of composure though, the Knights clawed their way back into the contest in a big way. But despite the gritty revival, Souths emerged victors by 34-30 with Cam Murray grabbing hat-trick of tries.
Meanwhile in the Harold Matthews Cup, a two-point thriller was played out between the Rabbitohs and Penrith, with the final score reading 26-24. The red and greens were aided by another hat-trick of tries, this time through Mawene Hiroti, while Raine Dellow picked up a double.
“This is a positive first step now for both these teams,” said Rabbitohs SG Ball Coach, former Rabbitohs halfback Willie Peters.
“I think what’s been shown this weekend is that we have an understanding that this is a whole new comp now and we’re treating it as such.”
While the Rabbitohs will head to Cairns to take on the Canberra Raiders, Peters urged those Rabbitohs Members and supporters not making the trip North to head out to Leichardt Oval this Saturday to cheer the boys on.
“I said it last week – the support and the noise means a lot to the boys,” said Peters.
“Rabbitohs Members and supporters have been outstanding following us throughout the season and we need them now more than ever to help us across the line.”
