Rabbits NYC Rout Roosters in See-Sawing Clash
The South Sydney Rabbitohs’ NYC side have stolen victory from the Roosters’ grasp in the final minute of the match to the tune of 24-22 in a see-sawing affair at ANZ Stadium.
The lead changed hands on many occasions during the match, with the kicking of Jordie Hedges ultimately proving to be the difference with his four conversions.
A Roosters mistake in the first set of the game gifted the Rabbitohs first meaningful use of the ball on the 30 metre line, but equally poor handling by the home-side undid the opportunity.
The red and greens would atone just minutes later though, when a strong attacking raid a few sets later saw lock-forward Eden Syme crash over from short range to claim first points. Jordie Hedges converted from right in front to give the Rabbitohs an early six-point lead.
The Roosters hit straight back with a long-range effort from winger, Joseph Manu, who raced 40 metres down the touch-line to open his side’s account for the afternoon out wide. Jackson Hastings nailed the conversion to equalise.
Manu was at it again down his flank not long afterwards when he raced through in similar fashion to his first try – Hastings again adding the conversion to make 12-6.
An arm-wrestle ensued in a dead-lock that wouldn’t be broken until two minutes before half-time when Rabbitohs hooker Aaron Booth dived over from dummy-half, before Hedges added the extras to equalise the match for the second time as the teams went into the sheds.
On the resumption, Roosters winger Manu went in to complete his hat-trick eight minutes in, breaking the deadlock to make it 16-12 in favour of the Tricolours.
Thirteen minutes from full-time, the Rabbitohs went on the attack and came up trumps through Liam Coleman, who took a well-timed pass to break into the open before racing 25 metres to touch down right next to the posts. Hedges successfully added the extras to re-take the lead at 18-16 with 12 minutes remaining.
The Roosters his back minutes later through Paul Momirovski to re-take the lead – the centre converting his own try to make it 22-18 with six minutes on the clock.
With the clock down to the last minute, Jordie Hedges conjured a last gasp try to equalise before converting it himself to seal the victory by 24-22.
Rabbitohs 24 (Eden Syme, Aaron Booth, Liam Coleman, Jordie Hedges tries; Jordie Hedges 4 goals)
Roosters 22 (Joseph Manu 3, Paul Momirovski, tries; Jackson Hastings 2, Paul Momirovski 1, goals)
