Rabbitohs prop-forward, George Burgess, has labelled this Sunday’s Rabbitohs v Roosters blockbuster as ‘one for the fans’ after both sides finished round one with impressive victories.
The cross-town foundation rivals were in fine form during the opening round of the Premiership, beginning with the Rabbitohs on Thursday, who came away with an emphatic 36-6 victory over the Broncos, while the Roosters also left Queensland with two points after thumping the Cowboys 28-4.
“Like you’ve seen, they were very strong out of the gates,” said Burgess of the Roosters.
“It’ll be a tough one this game, one for the fans this weekend – it’ll be a good one.”
With the likes of Greg Inglis, Adam Reynolds and Luke Keary set to face off against Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney, the already bubbling cross-town rivalry is set to feature some of the game’s biggest names.
For Burgess and his Rabbitohs teammates, the encounter between the 2013 Premiers and his 2014 Premiers will be a good test.
“Every game is a test,” said Burgess.
“Every game’s an opportunity to show what we can do and it’s no different on Sunday.
“All over the park there’s good matchups – in the halves and in the forward pack, I’m looking forward to it.”
The two sides met on three occasions during 2014, with the ledger standing at 2-1 in favour of Souths – including a thrilling Preliminary Final victory at ANZ Stadium to get into the Grand Final.
The Rabbitohs will take on the Sydney Roosters in their first home game of the season at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, 15 March at 4pm. Tickets are available now through Ticketek.
