Rabbitohs Go Down to Broncos in Round One of Holden Cup
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Brisbane Broncos away from home in round one of the Holden Cup competition, going down 36 points to 10 at Suncorp Stadium tonight (Thursday).
The Broncos scored seven-tries-to-two with ill-discipline hurting the Rabbitohs on more than one occasion throughout the match.
The Broncos scored first through fullback Paul Byrnes who ran the length of the field to score after a poor kick and defensive effort. The conversion attempt was waved away, giving the Broncos a four-nil lead after six minutes.
The home side scored the second try of the game when the Rabbitohs made a horrific error on their own line, leaving lock Jai Arrow to dive on the ball and score. Jayden Nikorima missed his second conversion attempt, leaving the score at 8-0 after 14 minutes.
The first try of the Rabbitohs’ season was scored in the right hand corner by Irae Simone after some good lead up work from Cheyne Whitelaw, Brock Gray, Jordie Hedges and Haimona Hiroti. Hedges missed the conversion attempt from out wide, reducing the deficit to four points after 20 minutes.
The Broncos struck back in the 30th minute when winger Nikau Terupe made the most of a right side overlap to score. The conversion missed again, taking the score line to 12-4.
The Broncos were having some success down their right side attack, with centre Jayden Nikorima scoring out wide three minutes later. The kick for goal missed again, taking the score line to 16-4 after 35 minutes.
The Broncos scored again through Tim Wolens in the 38th minute when halfback Ash Taylor put in a deft grubber kick under the posts for Wolens to pounce. Taylor converted to take the score out to 22 points to 4.
The home side closed out the half with a penalty goal to Ash Taylor adjacent to the posts, giving the Broncos a 24-4 lead at the break.
Ill-discipline cost the Rabbitohs in the first half in terms of pressure and opportunities, and that same poor discipline hurt them early in the second half when Taylor scored in the 42nd off the back of another penalty. He converted his own try to take the lead out to 26 points for the home team.
South Sydney scored their second try through new recruit Angus Crichton, who literally ran over three Broncos defenders to score adjacent to the posts in the 61st minute. Jordie Hedges converted to take the score line to 30-10.
The Broncos put the finishing touches on their performance when Sam Lavea crossed in the 76th minute, Taylor’s conversion taking the score line to 36-10 at full time.
