George Burgess remembers vividly the moment that he was officially welcomed into the Rabbitohs Family, and it was in front of that Family at Return to Redfern in 2011.
In what has fast become an important tradition at South Sydney in recent times, new recruits are presented with their first Rabbitohs jersey at the pre-season Return to Redfern clash by Club legends and existing players in front of Members.
The ceremony has proven to be an emotional moment for incoming players who receive their stripes for the first time from people who have bled for the jersey.
For George Burgess, his welcome to the Club was made extra special when he was presented with his jersey by older brother Sam just prior to the Rabbitohs 2011 Return to Redfern clash against the Newtown Jets.
“A few fond memories – a few warm memories,” recalled George.
“I remember that day being forty-plus degrees so it was a tough initiation into the red and green, but other than that, it was a really special day for me, getting that jersey presented to me by my brother, having all those Rabbitohs fans welcome me to the Club – it was very special.
“It’s a great initiation. It was for me, and it will be on Saturday for all the new boys.”
As part of an action-packed match-day that will include everything from junior footy clinics to jumping castles for the kids, as well as the opportunity for Members to get their photo taken with the Provan-Summons Premiership Trophy, Burgess is excited by the chance to see the Club’s talented young brigade get an opportunity.
Head Coach, Michael Maguire, has named a Rabbitohs outfit brimming with youth for the clash, as well as the likes of new recruit Glenn Stewart, who will be presented with his Rabbitohs jersey before kick-off.
“It’s also a good opportunity to see some young talent that we’ve got in the Club,” said George.
“It’s always a good opportunity for those kinds of players and obviously it’s great to see those new stars in the red and green.”
The South Sydney Rabbitohs will take on the Northern Pride in this Saturday’s Return to Redfern clash and the boys need you there to help them get over the line! Be there to celebrate our return to our spiritual home and get your photo taken with the Provan-Summons Trophy, while the kids enjoy a footy clinic among a range of activities on the day! Kick-off is at 6pm.
