Rabbitohs Captain, John Sutton, yesterday (Thursday) teamed up with good mate, UFC flyweight Richie Vaculik, in a unique community initiative that brought together Souths Cares and the UFC’s Community Works program for an afternoon of training with children from the Marrickville Souths Breakfast and Fitness Club.
Both Sutton and Vaculik led students in a fun-filled session that demonstrated skills and techniques in both rugby league and mixed martial arts to students.
Established by Souths Cares and the Marrickville Council, Marrickville Souths Breakfast and Fitness Club works directly with the disadvantaged youth of the local community to promote healthy and safe lifestyle.
“Just to see some of the other UFC fighters from the States come over and give their time for the kids is great,” said Sutton.
“It’s always good to give back to the community and these kids.”
UFC Middleweight Champion, Chris Weidman was among the UFC contingent present on the day, with the champion citing the importance of elite athletes giving back to the community.
“When you get to the top, this is one of the most rewarding situations you could have – to give back to people,” said Weidman
“You have the power to inspire and there’s nothing more rewarding than that, so I love to do it, I love to give back and the UFC does a great job wherever they go helping out any kids in need.”
“Wherever you’re from – it doesn’t matter,” Chris Weidman
“You find something that you love, find a passion and work as hard as you can and you can achieve anything you want.”
