For some, living in another city would mean the end of regular weekends spent watching your team live – but not for Rabbitohs Members like Edwin Grant and his growing clan of Members.
Grant – now a Brisbane local – is as passionate a Rabbitoh as they come, with the 45 year old this week renewing 18 Memberships for the 2015 season including family and friends. But Edwin isn’t about to stop there, instead now looking to better his 2014 total signups of 25 Members – 11 of which were new to the Rabbitohs Family.
It’s not just the Membership numbers that are impressive when it comes to Edwin’s growing clan though. Edwin follows the red and greens to every match of the season, not just to show support for his team, but to meet with his extended family of Rabbitohs Members around Australia and New Zealand
“It’s the Bunnies! You’ve just got to do it,” smiled Grant.
“My family’s originally from the South Sydney area – Kingsford/Mascot – so supporting the Rabbitohs comes with the territory.
“When I moved, I was always going to continue being a Rabbitoh, so while I might live in Brisbane now, I fly down to Sydney each weekend to watch the boys and go to all of the away games too – I’ve been doing it for years now. One year I think I calculated it had cost me $50,000 just to follow the boys around.”
Grant is also planning to be at Langtree Park in the UK when the Rabbitohs attempt to become World Club Champions on the 22nd of February against St Helens.
“That’s what I love about supporting this Club – we’re all just as passionate as each other and go to great lengths to show that support,” said Grant.
“In some ways, it feels like it’s almost a duty to be a Member. You feel like you’re part of a passionate family. Wherever I travel, I see so many familiar faces and we tend to meet up with groups of people from the Burrow, so we recognise a lot of the people travelling many of them I’ve met on Facebook and we meet up at the games.
“A few of us have now embroidered our Membership numbers on our Stormtech jackets as well.”
The 2014 season provided the highlight for Edwin though, who was just two years old in the Rabbitohs last Premiership winning year of 1971. After the long wait, Edwin felt every bit a part of the team when the Rabbitohs were crowned NRL Premiers since he was just two years old.
“It was surreal,” admitted Grant.
“The build-up to the Grand Final from the Roosters game and after – the euphoria was just an unbelievable thing to be a part of and something I’ll remember forever.”
True to his fine form as a ‘Rabbitoh recruiter’, Grant is urging Rabbitohs supporters everywhere to become a part of the team for 2015 and beyond for a taste of what he felt in 2014.
“Come join the family,” said Grant.
“Whether you’re a new member or a prodigal child coming back again, we want you back and in!”
