Rabbitohs legend, Nathan Merritt, spoke to Rabbitohs.com.au following the winger’s retirement announcement at Redfern today (Wednesday).
An emotional Merritt was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of family and friends who turned out for the announcement – one that will close the book on a glittering rugby league career.
“It was definitely an emotional day,” said Merritt.
“Announcing my retirement from my NRL career is pretty tough to handle, and to see all the family and friends here to support me and support that announcement was definitely emotional to see.
“I felt a bit teary at the start seeing everyone here. I didn’t think I’d make it through the speech so it was pretty tough. But that’s the support I’ve been getting my whole career.”
But while the day saw one door close for Merritt, another is only just opening, with the announcement that he will be launching the Nathan Merritt Foundation – a foundation that will provide support and mentoring for Indigenous youth in the South Sydney area, focusing particularly on Redfern.
The Nathan Merritt foundation is founded by Nathan and various other elite athletes who want to help and mentor young athletes who have faced adversity to reach their goals.
