South Sydney and rugby league legend, John Sattler, today (Tuesday) joined former teammates, friends, current Rabbitohs, family and media to launch his biography – Glory, Glory: My Life John Sattler at Redfern Town Hall.

Famous for playing 77 minutes of the 1970 Grand Final with a  badly broken jaw, for the first time, Sattler – through author Peter Badel – tells his story in his own words and in his own style: honest, uncompromising and direct. It’s the story of a boy from the bush who led the Pride of the League back to the top of the Sydney premiership.

Ever the humble man, Sattler admitted to not believing his story worth telling before beginning the process.

“I just thought that I was an ordinary player and I didn’t think that there was too much exciting in my life of rugby league, except my teammates and the Premierships we won and so on," said the former Rabbitohs skipper.

“I had a lot of nerve-wracking times in the make-up of it all, but it’s come out very, very well and Peter Badel (the books author) and the printing companies - they’ve done a wonderful job.”

Badel spoke to at the launch and emphasised the significance of finally getting Sattler’s story down on paper.

“He’s such a humble, private man – it’s something he didn’t want to do for a long time,” said Badel.

“He had numerous requests but he’s always knocked the requests because believe it or not, he didn’t think he had a story to tell, can you believe it?

“But thank god he has told the story, because it is a wonderful tale and it’ll be something that’s now cast in print forever.”

Sattler toured with the Kangaroos, played in four winning Grand Finals and survived a near fatal car crash. While he later built a new life for himself as a proud Queenslander, Sattler will always remain a South Sydney legend and an icon of the game.
