The South Sydney Rabbitohs NYC side has gone down to the Gold Coast Titans tonight (Monday) by 36-16 in round 17 of the Holden Cup competition.

Three tries to the Rabbitohs weren’t enough on a night dominated by the Titans, who looked well in control from the opening whistle, despite some spirited patches from the men in red and green.

The Titans were in first after just four minutes, when a back-line movement sent winger Zac Spring over in the corner to open their account for the night. Hooker Deacon Fletcher added the extras to make it 6-0 in favour of the visitors.

But it would take a while before either side looked like scoring again, with the Rabbitohs doing the honours 16 minutes from half-time when late inclusion, Aaron Booth darted over from dummy half under the sticks. Irae Simone slotted the conversion from in front to level it all up at six apiece.

With six minutes in the first half remaining, Titans fullback and co-captain Jahrome Hughes put in a chip over the top for himself on the 30 metre line before regathering and scoring next to sticks. Halfback Kane Elgey converted to give the Gold Coast a converted try advantage.

Elgey added six more points to his personal tally when he pounced on the ball in the in-goal to extend the Titans’ lead to 18-6 going into the sheds.

On the resumption, both teams exchanged blows for 10 minutes before the Rabbitohs finally got the upper hand when Irae Simone took a chip into the corner to score out wide. Simone sprayed the conversion attempt, leaving the score at 18-10.

But the Titans hit back just over half way through the second stanza when Brian Kelly crossed out wide to make it 22-10. Kane Elgey converted to make it 24-10.

The Gold Coast backed the effort up mere minutes later when Jaiden Hawkes took a well-timed pass on the chest to streak through, better the position and score behind the uprights. Elgey added the extras to make it 30-10.

With four minutes on the clock remaining, Titans replacement Shaun Hudson dived over in the corner to make it 36-10, before the Rabbitohs’ Tom Hughes grabbed a consolation try as the final hooter sounded. Irae Simone added the extras to make the final score 36-16.
