Rabbitohs outside back Lote Tuqiri says his team must learn to start better if they’re to be a chance of victory on Monday night against the Gold Coast Titans at ANZ Stadium.

The Rabbitohs found themselves with their backs to the wall early in round 16’s game against the North Queensland Cowboys in an old-fashioned ambush – something Tuqiri is adamant his team will have to rectify mentally.

“It’s just getting our head screwed on for the start of the game,” said Tuqiri.

“I think we got probably out-enthused last week and we couldn’t claw our way back from it. When we did, we put I think 18 points on them and maybe let one try in.

“So it’s just getting that good mix of getting our head in the start of the game and having that for the full 80 minutes.”

The veteran winger/centre has been astonished by the high quality of competition in 2014 – a level which he could scarcely have envisaged when he made his first grade debut for the Broncos way back in 1999.

“When I first came into the comp, I think we probably had two or three easy games,” said Tuqiri.

“But now, everyone’s at a level where you just can’t drop. Madge has drilled it into us since the pre-season.”
