Rabbitohs skipper John Sutton expects the Gold Coast Titans to leave nothing in the tank this Monday night at ANZ Stadium in the two side’s round 17 clash.
The Titans currently sit just two points out of the top eight, despite being in 13th position and coming off a string of losses. But Sutton and his team aren’t about to take their opposition lightly, with the Rabbitoh fully expecting a re-energised Gold Coast outfit, intent on changing their fortunes.
“I guess they haven’t been in the best of form lately, so I think they’ll be putting their season on the line this week – they’ll be coming fired up,” said Sutton.
The Rabbitohs will also be looking to get back in the winner’s circle after enduring a horror start to their last match against the Cowboys in Townsville – quickly finding themselves 14 points down inside the first 10 minutes.
Sutton stressed the importance of the Rabbitohs getting their start right this week if they are to get the two points.
“After our last performance, we definitely need to play a lot better and improve on our starts. Hopefully we can do it this week,” admitted the skipper.
“The first 20 minutes we didn’t touch the ball and gave them (the Cowboys) a big lead and it was hard to pull them back after that.
“We did a review, like we do after every game. We’ve just been training hard early in the week – it’s been a long turn-around, so we’ve still got a couple of sessions to go. Hopefully we just keep improving at training and hopefully it shows on the park.”
With just six points separating first from eighth, and a bottle-neck in the middle of the competition ladder, season 2014 has been among the most hotly contested in recent memory, a fact Sutton is well-aware of.
“It’s a real tight competition this year,” admitted Sutton.
“Every win is very important, especially from now on in, so we have to get back in the winner’s circle. We’ve got the bye the week after so we definitely have to get the two points this week.”
