A Members Perspective - Rd 17, 2014
Hello Members! My name is Kevin. I’m a long-time Rabbitohs Member, and I’ve been given the great honour of writing this week's 'Member's Perspective'.
I've been fortunate enough to have been born into a South Sydney family with red and green blood flowing through my veins. I've also been fortunate enough to have been around to witness all of those glory days that we are so fond of. I was at the SCG with family and friends in the early days, witnessed us winning Premierships, and remember the cauldron of Redfern in all its glory – a site which all teams feared. They’re memories that have lasted a lifetime!
But you know what? There’s more to being a Rabbitoh than just that. It's seeing your own family grow into the history and become part of it. It’s seeing Souths on TV, or in the paper, and you can’t help but stop and look, or that pride you feel when you see a car drive by with a Rabbitohs bumper sticker. When our team runs onto the field, I have a lump in my throat and have misty eyes. My chest bursts with pride as I wave my scarf! The adrenalin, the song, the history, the emotion, the occasion, our heroes past and present – what a truly great family we’re a part of!
But If I don't stop now, I'll forget about this week’s game!
Last week was an old fashioned ambush by the Cowboys. We got off on the wrong foot and before we knew it we were 14 down. But the team did us proud by fighting back with that South Sydney spirit and at 20-18 with 14 minutes to go, we could have pulled it off. We lost our way a bit – maybe playing catch up was too great a hurdle, but we're sure that coach Maguire will have assessed the performance and the team will be primed for a much improved display this week against the Titans.
On the Titans game, our depth will once again be tested with origin players missing, but the Titans are in the same boat, so we have no excuses. It gives players such as Lowe, Api and Clark the opportunity to step up to assist leaders like Sammy Burgess and Issac Luke in the forwards and Sutton & Reynolds in the backs. But the main focus this week will be to start well, complete our sets and out-enthuse them. That well may be the key!
The football gods aren't doing us any favours, and there are no short cuts! It’s up to us, as a team and as a Club this Monday night to put in a great performance on Monday. So come on Souths army, come on Member's. Let's get out to ANZ Stadium on Monday night and support our heroes on their path to creating their own history!
