The New South Wales Physical Disability Rugby League Association (NSWPDRLA) are pleased to announce that during the 2014 NAIDOC celebrations on Sunday July 13th 2014 at Redfern Oval, Souths Cares, will host a physical disability representative rugby league match with teams comprised of our playing members.
The Combined Indigenous Nations side will take on the NSWPDRLA All Stars side, with kick off set for 11.10am.
Former South Sydney Rabbitohs Superstar Rhys Wesser will turn out for the Combined Indigenous Nations side as an Able Bodied player on the day.
The New South Wales Physical Disability Rugby League Association (NSWPDRLA) was established in October 2010 to conduct, encourage, promote, advance and administer Physical Disability Rugby League throughout New South Wales. We provide the framework, the Constitution, the rules and the support for clubs to evolve and make it possible for those who can’t play elsewhere to play the greatest game of all.
The Association has grown from its original two teams to a permanent and robust yearly competition comprising of teams representing South Sydney Rabbitohs, Sydney Roosters, Manly Sea Eagles and Newtown Jets.
The Association’s current main focus is to increase its player’s base from an already 40 strong membership, so that more teams can be formed. It is also working towards an interstate competition.
NSWPDRLA recently returned from a trip to Dubbo where it competed in a City v Country fixture alongside the NRL representative game.
Under modified rules with U16’s and those with certain disabilities wearing Red shorts and playing touch football rules when attempting to “tackle” or be “tackled”. Other players play the standard full contact tackle rules. Able-bodied players can and do play PDRL. A maximum of two per team are allowed on the field at any time. Able-bodied players cannot score tries, kick goals or kick in general play but help facilitate the game.
The Association attracts players with a variety of disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, amputees, acquired brain injuries and Muscular Atrophy. It welcomes players from all backgrounds, cultures, genders and abilities. If any players with a physical disability would like to play in the competition, please come down on Sunday and see the games.
The NSW Physical Disability Rugby League Association would like to thank Kari Aboriginal Resources Inc, NTSCORP, South’s Cares and Macarthur Disability Services and NSW Rugby League, without their support this game would not be possible. The board and I look forward to working with you closely concerning this yearly event.
