Souths NYC Downed By Tigers
The South Sydeny Rabbitohs’ NYC side has gone down to the Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium by 28-18 in round 14 of the Holden Cup.
It took 13 minutes for the teams to finally draw first blood, and it came in the form of the Tigers’ Mitch Moses slicing through the Rabbitohs’ defence before racing 30 metres to score under the sticks. Matt Woods converted to give the Tigers an early six point lead.
Wests were at it again just minutes later when Moses passed onto winger John Tohi on the wing, who raced the remaining 20 metres down the touch-line to score to make it 10-6.
Moses continued to dominate two minutes later when he again raced through the Rabbitohs defence to notch up his second try of the night – bettering the position to score under the sticks.
Right on the stroke of half-time, the Rabbitohs finally got over for their first points of the night when Wallace Tangiiti chipped across-field for a flying Sam Young to pluck the ball out of the air and score. Irae Simone converted from the touchline as the siren sounded to make it 16-6 in favour of the Tigers at half-time.
The Rabbitohs went on the offensive in the second stanza with Tulsa Saumamao barging over from close range. Simone converted again to make it 16-12.
But the Tigers would hit back through John Tohi, who raced over in the far corner to extend the Tigers’ lead. Mitch Moses converted from the touchline to make it 22-12 with 15 minutes remaining.
Wests weren’t about to be trumped, when Watson Heleta went up for a high ball from short range to score under the posts. Matt Woods converted from close range to make it 28-12 with nine minutes left on the clock.
The Rabbitohs wouldn’t give up though. With two minutes remaining, front-rower PJ Los’e crashed over under the sticks from short range before Simone added the extras to make the final score 28-18.
Tigers 28 (Mitch Moses 2, John Tohi 2, Watson Heleta, tries; Matt Woods 3 Mitch Moses 1 goals)
