The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fallen to the Brisbane Broncos by 20 points to 12 at Suncorp Stadium tonight (Friday), after leading six-nil at the half time break.

Fatigue set in for the Rabbitohs in the final 25 minutes of the match after defending stoutly for the first 55 minutes – the Broncos crossing for four tries in the final 25 minutes to register victory.

The Rabbitohs went to the half-time break leading six-nil courtesy of an Irae Simone try and conversion after just three minutes of play. The Rabbitohs bombed Broncos fullback Kodi Nikorima who spilled the ball 10 metres out from his own line. The red and green’s made the most of the mistake, crossing from the next set of six to set up the six-point lead.

Both sides struggled to hold onto the ball in the first 40 minutes thanks to poor ball handling and ill-discipline. The Rabbitohs defensive performance, however, was top notch and a clean sheet at half time was well deserved.

The Rabbitohs were the first to score in the second half, again taking advantage of an error from the home-side. Winger Sam Young scooped a loose ball up metres from his own goal line before racing almost 100 metres to score at the opposite end. The conversion was waved away, moving the score to 10-nil in favour of South Sydney after 48 minutes.

A penalty goal to Simone from in front of the posts extended the Rabbitohs’ lead to 12 after 52 minutes.

But the Broncos registered their first points in the 58th minute when winger Elijah Alick crossed in the right-hand corner. The conversion attempt was waved away, reducing the Broncos’ deficit to eight points.

The home-side crossed for their second try six minutes later through second rower Brett Greinke, but the conversion attempt hit the upright and bounced away, taking the scores to 12-8 in favour of the Rabbitohs with 15 minutes remaining in the match.

The Broncos took the lead for the first time in the 70th minute when Brandon Lee crashed over next to the posts, and Jayden Nikorima converted to give Brisbane a 14-12 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Broncos sealed the win with a length of the field effort from Kodi Nikorima following an error from South Sydney in the 77th minute, with Jayden Nikorima adding the extras to seal the 20-12 win.

Broncos 20 (Elijah Alick, Brett Greinke, Brandon Lee, Kodi Nikorima tries; Jayden Nikorima 2 goals)

Rabbitohs 12 (Irae Simone, Sam Young tries; Irae Simone 2 goals)
