A Members Perspective - Round 8, 2014
In general, losing in the last few minutes of a game after leading for so long would cut quite deep, but gee I was proud of our players! We did it with five rookies and a severely depleted bench too.
I was absolutely impressed by Sutton and Sam Burgess for standing up in this game. Every time I see Sutton take on the line and score a try I get a feeling of pride – like a mother for her child. He is one of the most dangerous players in the game when he plays like that. He is like a fighter-plane locked onto a target.
And speaking of fighter planes, what about Sam’s Kamikaze kick-return? You know the one I’m talking about! He knew his team was depleted and he stood up. That run on its own deserved the two points. It is actions like that, that make me believe we have every chance in the world this year.
This week we have the Broncos. They are fifth, but have lost three from their last five games. We have Te’o and George back which will also strengthen the ranks. Why is this game so important then? Because we have two big away trips to get through – Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and then five Sydney games.
Each one of those Sydney games can be ours if we get the small things right. If we can knock over these two next away games and come home with momentum, then we can tackle the ladder and push into a fight for a solid run into the business end of the season.
I believe these next two games are quite important. In enemy territory, if we can bring back four points we will set ourselves up for an achievable top-four positioning. We are only two wins behind first after all, along with the Roosters nipping at our heels.
To all the Members taking the trip to Brisbane, I salute you. Suncorp is a stadium many fear, but we go there with pride and belief. I hope you are treated to a fabulous win, and thank you for carrying our colours and voice across the border. It is an away trip I have enjoyed on many occasions and one that is truly memorable.
Do not let the sea of maroon and yellow deter you! Let those voices off the leash and make sure our boys hear your conviction. It’s up to all of us to help the team climb the ladder!
Up the Mighty Rabbitohs!
